Built because the data wasn’t there.

Threshold started because the aviation weather apps I could find were built for the continental United States, and I was not always in it.

I have been an Army aviator for ten years. The pattern that kept repeating was simple: a weather app that worked beautifully at home, then showed nothing useful at the field I was actually flying from — no NOTAMs, no forecast, or a blank entry where the text should have been. Military aerodromes report in a slightly different shape than civil ones, and most apps quietly do not handle it.

So the first thing Threshold does properly is work everywhere. Weather and NOTAMs cover 9,872 stations across 239 countries, and military fields render their NOTAM text in full rather than as empty rows. That is not a marketing feature; it is the reason the app exists.

What it is

A supplemental situational awareness tool. It puts the weather, airspace and NOTAM data for where you are flying in front of you quickly and honestly. It is deliberately not a certified electronic flight bag — no synthetic vision, no approach-certified navigation, no in-flight traffic. Those are real capabilities with real certification behind them, and pretending otherwise would be worse than not having them.

How it is built

Everything that can live on your device does. The entire national airspace system — 2,988 boundaries — ships with the app, so panning the map never waits on a network request and the layer works with no signal. Data that must be live is fetched, and when a source cannot be reached the app says so rather than showing you an empty screen that looks like good news.

That last principle is the one I care most about. An empty NOTAM list and a failed NOTAM request look identical to a pilot, and only one of them means the field is clear.

Threshold is published by Pollard Labs LLC, an Alabama limited liability company. It is a small operation — one person, no investors, no growth targets that require doing anything sideways with your data.
